Fiesta Premier Resort & Spa

When we decided to visit Costa Rica we chose to visit the west coast area. We flew into Liberia and upon landing, were guided into a machine shed to pass through immigration. The airport is primitive, with little equipment, so you have to expect this to take a little time.

Once through immigration, we collected our bags and headed to the buses. It was a short bus ride to our resort the Fiesta Premier Resort & Spa. It was tough to decide which resort to book. Although not many to choose from, there were conflicting reports on the reviews that we had read.

The Fiesta Premier (FP) is a small resort, having only 305 rooms. This was something that we looked forward to. Having stayed at some massive resorts in Mexico, we were looking for a more intimate and cozy atmosphere.

There are a lot of hills within the resort, but they offer a shuttle service that was quite efficient. Look for the "bus stops" throughout the resort and I don't think that we ever waited for more than 5 to 7 minutes for the next shuttle.

The staff were friendly and helpful. They all spoke reasonable english, so communication was never an issue.

Looking down from the rooms above
to the main pool and buffet area.

There was the main pool, which appeared to overflow into the ocean. This area had a swim up bar and was where the afternoon activities took place. Beside the main pool, was a kids wading pool, and a pool volleyball area. We were always able to find lounge chairs, either around the pool, or facing the ocean.

Over on the spa side was the adult pool area. This area was very quiet with little activity.

There was a snack bar and fruit smoothie bar adjacent to the pool, as well this is where the exercise room and massage studio are located.

It was a nice short beach walk from the spa area to the main pool/buffet area.

The beach was very clean. There was a mixture of sand color, but mostly black or darker sand was present as it is created from volcanic ashes. It created some very unique and interesting designs as the tide came in and out.

With the many hills and distance between amenities, the shuttle service was a welcome part of the resort.

Upon boarding the shuttle, you simply asked the driver to take you anywhere on the resort grounds, and away he would take you.

One of the numerous "bus stops" on the resort.

The buffet area was fairly small, but there was always a good selection of foods available. Breakfasts were the best! Try the omelets and fresh fruit. Oh, and the coffee....oh my, the coffee was to die for!

We sat outdoors for every meal. There was plenty of seating, and with the gorgeous weather and scenery, we could not bear to sit indoors.

Very clean and comfortable room. Contrary to reports that we had heard, there were very few bugs at all. We often kept our patio door open while we were in the room.

The view from our patio.

Our room was very nice. It was roomy, clean, and well equipped including a coffee maker, mini-fridge, and digital safe. Our key did not work in the lock, but they came right over to replace the lockset for us.

The tub drained slowly, but we didn't bother to mention that during the week. It didn't really bother us at all.

The view from our room was breathtaking! There was only 1 other resort in the entire bay, so all we could really see was the great Costa Rican scenery.

Each morning we were serenaded by the numerous species of birds that lived right outside our patio door. My morning ritual was to get up, sit on the patio, and soak up the sights, sounds and smells of this wonderful country.

The traditional towel swan.

In the evening once it was dark, the crabs would scurry across the beach. It was easy to spot them, but they move fast. During the day you could see their holes that they would burrow into, but rarely did we see the actual crabs in the daylight.

The mound of sand and distance that it was tossed, was incredible as opposed to the size of the crabs.

There were various activities at the resort throughout the day, including beach and pool volleyball, nature and sunset hikes, snorkeling (bring a banana and you will have 100's of tropical fish around you - watch out at various times for tiny jelly fish - I think when the tide was coming in).

They also had kayaks that you could use, or join in an organized kayak excursion.

Be forewarned that the dark sand gets VERY VERY hot in the afternoon. Usually the court was wet down prior to the game, but some days the hose wasn't around.

The sand is dark and very fine as it is volcanic ash dust. Across the bay was some white sand (from the coral reefs).

Check out the other Costa Rica reviews that we posted from this trip. There you will find some of the flora and fauna that we experienced on the resort grounds.

Use the safe in the room. We had no security issues, but they seemed to leave our door unlocked after having it cleaned. We thought that they might go back and lock all the door once done that section, but we never did verify that.

All in all, I would recommend the Fiesta Premier Resort and Spa. It was comfortable and relaxing. We really enjoyed our stay.
